Let’s Start with Heart!

27% of deaths among residents in Cayman in 2022 were caused by cardiovascular diseases

(THE CAYMAN ISLANDS’ COMPENDIUM OF STATISTICS, 2022)

While these statistics can be disheartening, many of these deaths can be prevented with relatively simple lifestyle changes. At Optimal Healthcare our mission is to transform health and healthcare alike, to deliver an optimal health span within a long lifespan, and thus vibrancy to life. We have a real opportunity to do that for the Cayman Islands, leading to happier, healthier and longer lives.

Our vision for this event is to highlight the inspirational lives people live in the Blue Zones, and lead the discussion on the potential for the Cayman Islands to become one.

Join Us. Hear the Stories.

And let us transform health, together, for the Cayman Islands.

Introducing the Blue Zones

The term “blue zones” was first coined by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Explorer and Fellow and journalist, during an exploratory project he led in 2004. After an expedition to Okinawa, Japan in 2000 to investigate the longevity there, he set out to explore other regions of the world with reportedly high longevity. With the support of National Geographic, Dan, and his team of scientists and demographers travelled the world in search of communities where people not only lived longer but also enjoyed a high quality of life into their old age. After analysing demographic data and interviewing numerous centenarians, they identified five regions that stood out for their extraordinary longevity and vitality.

Readers

We are delighted to bring the Blue Zones project to Cayman, and invite you to hear about this amazing journey from Nick Buettner, one of the core Blue Zones leaders.

Introducing Nick Buettner

Nick’s role as Program Director with Blue Zones Project is to bring the longevity lessons from areas like Ikaria, Greece, Nicoya, Costa Rica, and Okinawa, Japan to a larger audience, positively impacting the health of over 5 million people.

As a speaker, he shares both the encouraging real data about Blue Zones areas and their habits and practices as well as his own personal anecdotes about his conversations with these amazing people. He confesses that a 104 year old woman told him she feels sexier at her age than she did at 103. It’s these stories that make his feature presentations so engaging while spreading crucial health guidance to help everyone live a better, longer life.

Optimal Healthcare was established with a mission to transform health and healthcare alike, to deliver an optimal healthspan within a long lifespan, and thus vibrancy to life, both for our patients but also at a population level in the Cayman Islands. It’s a mission we clearly share with the Blue Zones team.

We strongly believe that for the Cayman Islands to sustain affordable, and universally accessible healthcare, it is vital that we work together to inspire and create health.

It is for this reason that we could not be more proud to bring The Blue Zones Project directly to our shores.

At Bacaro, our team consists of some of Cayman’s best chefs and support staff, all focused on providing an exceptional guest experience. We are inspired by Sardinia—an amazing Island and original Blue Zone, where food, environment, and a love for life are literally palpable.

Cayman has a beautiful environment, stated goals to be an eco-friendly destination, and is already a nation that embraces living harmoniously in our unique Cayman-kind manner. It is easy to foresee Cayman becoming a Blue Zone.

We believe our passion for food, vitality and our own travels to multiple Blue Zones, has virtually destined Bacaro to be the host venue for such an amazing initiative.

We are delighted to invite you to join us and enjoy our reproduction of Blue Zones-inspired cuisine.

Net Proceeds to Supporting Health

Discovering the Blue Zones – The Secret to Living Better, Longer is a not-for-commercial-profit event.

The Cayman Heart Foundation is passionately committed to saving lives by early identification of cardiovascular problems, as well as improving both awareness and attainment of heart health. Blue Zones populations are health-healthy ones, and the traits that lead to their healthy longevity place the missions of the CHF and the Blue Zones Project firmly in alignment.

For this reason, we will be donating no less than 75% of the net proceeds* of this amazing event to the ongoing work for the Cayman Heart Foundation.

The remainder of the net proceeds will go towards ensuring that that this event is just the beginning of our efforts to establish a set of blue zones principles and behaviours in the cayman Islands, something we hope we will all then enjoy as a community of centenarians!

* net proceeds is defined as the surplus of revenue over expenses
