Introduction

We are seeking a passionate, baby and family focused Neonatologist with excellent tertiary experience, to join our amazing team in the Cayman Islands.  You’ll be working from the new 8,000sqft Optimal Healthcare Medical Centre, when not attending deliveries and NICU at our local hospitals (including two excellent neonatal units). Whereas the focus is very specifically neonatology, you will also attend regular deliveries and see general paediatric patients too, when not attending.

And not just any Neonatologist… We’re genuinely redefining healthcare in ways we can only share in person, but what we can share is that it is based on an absolute focus on and commitment to our mission; to transform health and healthcare alike, to deliver an optimal healthspan within a long lifespan, and thus vibrancy to life. We want someone determined to go back to delivering truly optimal healthcare, in a deeply empowering environment where you get to truly impact the lives of patients every day, and despite the commitment that obviously entails, have optimal work-life balance too, in an amazing environment, amongst wonderful people?

If that actually sounds like why you entered medicine, we think you might be excited at the opportunity we are offering.

Are we right for each other?

There’s a reason not a single doctor we’ve recruited has ever resigned… and this is it.

You’ll be someone who first and foremost is truly devoted to their patients, and every day turns up aspiring to be and do their very best, because it’s part of your very soul. You’ll be someone who places their patient’s interests above economics or business, and you’ll be wanting a professional home that not only accepts this but in fact embraces it and would have it no other way (whilst ensuring your commitment does not go unrewarded either). And to be your best every day, you’ll be wanting an employer and an environment that makes you smile every morning when it’s time to go do.

We’re guessing this is close to why you went into medicine… and it should.

Every physician that has ever worked for us has stayed with us (barring one retirement!), and we believe that says something. So, we have already redefined what it means to be a truly great employer. We started our new practice to truly embody our values and to redefine sustainable, health-focused care, without the influences of corporate interest. And we see our role as the relentless pursuit of making your life as easy, secure and enjoyable as possible, so that you can passionately pass that on to patients.

And there are some other important things too:

  • You’ll be treated like responsible professionals, with autonomy and flexibility
  • We’ll be asking how we can help you deliver even better quality & service, NOT billing and numbers
  • We’ll be regularly checking all is OK, and ensuring matters are tackled where not
  • We’ll be trying to maximise the time on what you love, by minimising what it takes to get the job done well
  • And we’ll be working together, hand-in-hand, to transform the bar in healthcare… again

Transforming Healthcare… Again

We’re redefining healthcare in the Cayman Islands, and patients are already really liking it, because our heart is in the right place, our integrity is unquestionable, and we’re truly shifting the paradigm from an obsession on sickness, running a myriad of diagnostics and billing fees, to health, wellness and patient-centric healthcare. We’re re-defining easy, and we’re unwaveringly committed to excellence.

An example already in place is the absolute first that our patients get to simple depart after a consultation, not stand in a billing line, because that’s what is in their best interests. And it takes a big pressure off you too. We trust our patients and want to make their life easy. And it is now proven too.

And when everyone realises just how much we’re innovating the healthcare experience, focus and professional employment, it will really matter. After all what’s a rewarding future worth if it’s not sustainable, right?

Job Overview & Responsibilities

You will be responsible, as part of a team, for the care of neonatal patients booked under Optimal Healthcare. We are belessed with two NICUs, including a brand new, well-equipped one at Health City Camana Bay, allowing the Island to also take referrals from within the Caribbean as a whole.

You will be working alongside Dr Sara Watkin, Neonatologist, Medical Director for Optimal Healthcare and former Chief of Service for NICU at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, creating an amazing team for delivering neonatal care of the highest calibre, regardless of illness severity. The working environment at Optimal is exceptional, meaning you can be a Neonatologist in the Cayman Islands or an Optimal Neonatlogist in the Cayman Islands. They are not the same thing. We’d be very happy to explain why.

Key Responsibilities

Neonatology & Newborn

  • Attend deliveries of both term and preterm infants as requested by parents, or advised in consultation with obstetric colleagues.
  • Provide immediate care for newborns, including initial assessment and management of admission to NICU at Cayman Islands Hospital or Health City Camana Bay.
  • Undertake newborn baby checks, including onward referrals and care.
  • Engage in the resuscitation, stabilisation, and transfer of newborns to NICU at Cayman Islands Hospital or Health City Camana Bay, where necessary.
  • Where advisable, admit children to the paediatric ward at George Town Hospital for further care.
  • Order, interpret, and discuss diagnostic test results to help determine medical conditions.
  • Explain treatments, medical procedures, and test results to parents and family members with clarity and empathy.
  • Develop, recommend, and manage treatment plans, including medications, therapy, vaccinations, and specialised care, adjusting as necessary.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust treatment as needed to ensure optimal care outcomes.
  • Coordinate and supervise the activities of therapists, assistants, nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and other support staff.
  • Refer patients to specialists or other physicians when warranted for further medical evaluation and treatment.
  • Coordinate and liaise with overseas healthcare providers, insurers, and overseas offices to ensure timely and safe patient transfers when specialist care abroad is required.
  • Clearly record all patient data, including history, examinations, medications, vaccinations, diagnoses, treatment plans, and prognosis, in the Cayman Islands Hospital electronic patient record system (Cerner) or the EPR at Health City Camana Bay.
  • Deliver care in a manner that upholds admitting rights at Cayman Islands Hospital and other birthing institutions.
  • Manage complex medical conditions such as respiratory distress, infections, congenital abnormalities, and birth complications.
  • Work closely with obstetricians, paediatricians, nurses, and other specialists to ensure coordinated care.
  • Provide guidance and support to NICU nursing staff and other doctors.
  • Perform specialised procedures such as intubation, central line insertion, lumbar puncture, and exchange transfusion.
  • Stay up to date with the latest research and best practices in neonatology.
  • Provide palliative care and support for families facing complex ethical decisions about neonatal treatment.
  • Guide parents through difficult discussions regarding prognosis and treatment limitations.

General Paediatrics

The nature of providing healthcare on a 22-mile Island with a population just short of 90,000 persons, means that there are inevitable peaks and troughs of workload, Consequently, to ensure sustainability for highly specialist roles like a neonatologist, we need individuals happy to engage in general paediatrics.

  • Provide medical care, including diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses.
  • To support optimal health, where possible, in all children
  • To develop strong lifelong relationships with families through trust and mutual respect
  • To be available to families as needed when on call for the practice
  • Collaborate with both internal and external healthcare professionals to deliver optimal multidisciplinary care
  • Engage children and their families in health education and preventive strategies to empower them in managing their health.
  • Utilise advanced diagnostic tools and health technologies to enhance patient care.
  • Support community health initiatives, screening and wellness programs to promote a healthier population.
  • Stay updated in general paediatrics, as well as neonatal medicine.
  • Deliver healthcare that you are utterly proud of and that fires you up every morning.

We are looking for someone with some paediatric experience, to care for children both in an office and a hospital setting. Full support of the general paediatric team will always be on hand. General paediatric work is very varied from seeing children with GP type complaints, undertaking wellness checks, managing complex chronic disease and neurodiversity. The role gives you the opportunity to get to know your patients and their families properly and to provide true holistic not just sickness care.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree from an accredited institution and current licensure* to practice as a Neonatologist and Paediatrician.
  • At least 5 years experience at consultant level
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate children and their families toward healthier lifestyles.
  • Proficient in using electronic health records (EHR) and other healthcare technologies.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage a diverse patient caseload.

*We are able to recruit professionals fully trained e.g. CCT, and licensed in at least one of 7 accepted jurisdictions, being United Kingdom, United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand or Jamaica.

Position Terms & Conditions

  • Basic salary up to $210,000 Cayman Islands Dollars per annum
  • Additional incentive scheme (to be disclosed in personal discussions)
  • 50% contributory, 50% non-contributory Health Insurance (mandatory by Law)
  • 50% contributory, 50% non-contributory Pension, based on a capped maximum (mandatory by Law)
  • 5 days paid study leave (excludes costs)
  • 12 Public Holidays per annum
  • Vacation leave (to be disclosed in personal discussions)
  • Flexible working arrangements (to be disclosed in personal discussions)

Note: The incentive scheme is NOT based on billing value. We want zero conflict of interest with the best interests of the patient, first and foremost. Let’s just say it’s a ‘healthy’ alternative and likely more rewarding!
