Coughs, Colds & Fevers
Coughs, colds, and fevers are common in children, usually caused by viral infections. Symptoms include sneezing, congestion, sore throat, and fever. While most resolve without treatment, rest, hydration, and symptom relief can help. If your child’s symptoms worsen or persist longer than expected, book an appointment with our paediatric team.
Dr Sara filmed a video on Fever in children, as a part of our ‘Never Ignore Problems or Symptoms (NIPS)’ video series, which includes guidance on when to see a doctor immediately.
Rhinitis & Runny Nose Problems
Rhinitis refers to inflammation of the nasal lining, leading to symptoms like a runny nose, sneezing, and congestion. It can be caused by allergies or infections. Treatment for this can include antihistamines or decongestants. Identifying the underlying cause is also important to manage symptoms effectively and prevent recurrence.
Acute or Chronic Vomiting & Diarrhoea
Vomiting and diarrhoea can be acute, often due to bacterial infections or viruses such as rotavirus, or chronic, linked to digestive disorders. Rehydration is crucial, particularly in younger children. If your child has persistent or severe cases, our team will conduct further assessments and work to identify the root cause of these recurring epsiodes.
Abdominal Pain (Acute & Chronic)
Abdominal pain in children can be acute, often related to infections, or chronic, linked to conditions like irritable bowel syndrome. Pain may also result from constipation or food sensitivities. Treatment depends on the cause, and a thorough evaluation is needed for persistent or severe symptoms.
See video from Dr Sara on Chronic Abdominal Pain here.
Constipation & Bowel Issues
Constipation in children can be caused by poor diet, dehydration, or stress. Symptoms include infrequent, painful bowel movements. In some cases, bowel issues may also indicate underlying conditions. Treatment from our paediatric team may involve recommendations for dietary changes, increased fluid intake, and sometimes medication to encourage regular bowel movements.
Food Intolerances & Allergies
Food intolerances and allergies can cause gastrointestinal distress, skin reactions, or respiratory symptoms. Common allergens include milk, eggs, nuts, and wheat. Diagnosis often involves tests or elimination diets. Avoiding trigger foods and carrying prescribed medications like antihistamines or epinephrine is key for managing symptoms effectively.
Obesity & Weight Management Issues
Obesity in children can be linked to poor diet, lack of physical activity, and genetics. Addressing obesity involves a balanced approach, focusing on healthy eating habits, regular exercise, and behavioural changes. Our team at Optimal can help provide comprehensive strategies for weight management and overall well-being.
Eating Disorders & Anorexia
Eating disorders like anorexia nervosa often affect adolescents and involve an unhealthy focus on weight and food. Symptoms may include restrictive eating, fear of weight gain, and extreme behaviours around food. Early intervention and professional support are crucial to address the psychological and physical health impacts.
Asthma, Bronchiolitis & Breathing Difficulties
Asthma and bronchiolitis are respiratory conditions causing breathing difficulties in children. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath. Asthma is often chronic, while bronchiolitis typically affects infants. Management may include inhalers, medication, and avoiding triggers.

Eczema and Dermatitis
Eczema and dermatitis are skin conditions that cause itching, redness, and inflammation. They can be triggered by allergens, irritants, or stress. Treatment includes moisturising creams, anti-inflammatory medications, and avoiding triggers. Regular skincare routines and avoiding harsh products can help manage symptoms and flare-ups. Some children’s eczema can also be triggered by a change in weather. If you’ve recently moved to the Cayman Islands from a country with a colder climate, we always recommend coming in for an initial consultation and discussion of adjusting to a new place, potential triggers, and modifying treatment.
Headache & Neurological Issues
Headaches in children can be caused by tension, illness, or more serious neurological conditions. Migraines, in particular, are common and may include nausea or sensitivity to light. Neurological concerns may also involve seizures or developmental delays. Our paediatric care team at Optimal in Cayman provides thorough assessments to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.
Anaemia & Blood Disorders
Anaemia is a condition where there is a shortage of red blood cells, leading to fatigue, weakness, and pallor. Iron deficiency is the most common cause in children. Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease and haemophilia require specialised care. Treatment includes dietary changes, supplements, and medical management.
Vitamin Deficiencies
Vitamin deficiencies can affect children’s growth, development, and immune function. Common deficiencies include vitamin D, iron, and B12. Symptoms vary but may include fatigue, weakness, and poor growth. Treatment can involve dietary adjustments and supplementation, with ongoing monitoring to ensure nutritional balance and optimal health.
Joint Pains, Juvenile Arthritis & Swelling
Joint pain and swelling in children may indicate juvenile arthritis, an autoimmune condition causing inflammation in the joints. Symptoms include stiffness, pain, and swelling, often in the morning. Early diagnosis and treatment are important to prevent long-term joint damage and improve quality of life with medications and therapy.
Developmental Concerns & School Issues
Developmental concerns may arise in children experiencing delays in speech, motor skills, or social development. School-related issues, such as learning difficulties or behavioural challenges, can also affect progress. Early assessment and intervention are vital in providing the support needed to address these challenges and ensure academic success.
Behavioural Concerns
Behavioural concerns in children can include aggression, anxiety, or attention difficulties. These may stem from environmental, social, or psychological factors. A thorough evaluation can help identify the cause, with interventions such as therapy, behavioural strategies, and family support to address the child’s needs and improve behaviour.

Sleeping Disorders & Teenage Problems
Sleep disorders, including insomnia or sleep apnoea, are common in children and teens. Poor sleep can impact mood, behaviour, and academic performance. Teenage years can bring additional challenges like anxiety or hormonal changes affecting sleep. Addressing sleep hygiene and underlying issues is essential for healthy development.
Seizures & Febrile Fits
Seizures in children can result from various causes, including fever (febrile fits), epilepsy, or head injuries. Febrile fits typically occur in children aged 6 months to 5 years and usually resolve without lasting effects. Seizures require medical assessment to determine the cause and appropriate treatment to ensure safety and health.
